Stellantis Small & Medium-Sized EVs Will Get 435 Miles Per Charge and Build up to 2 Million Per Year
Automaker Stellantis has announced that its upcoming compact and midsize electric vehicles (EVs) will be capable of traveling up to 435 miles (700 kilometers) per charge. The company unveiled a new medium-sized platform specifically designed to accommodate battery packs and electric drivetrains, and claims that the range offered by these EVs will be the best in their respective segments. This is a significant improvement over the current average range of around 300 miles. Stellantis, the result of a merger between Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot S.A., plans to introduce a total of 47 EV models worldwide by the end of next year.
The first vehicle to utilize this new platform will be the next generation of the Peugeot 3008, a small crossover SUV, with its release expected later this year. The company also stated that the new EVs will be sold under various brands including Peugeot, Opel, Lancia, and Chrysler in the United States. Alongside the high-range battery pack, Stellantis will offer a lower-range standard battery pack capable of over 310 miles (500 kilometers) per charge.
Stellantis is confident in its production capabilities, aiming to manufacture up to 2 million vehicles annually using the new platform. The company plans to utilize factories in France, Italy, Germany, and various locations in North America. Additionally, Stellantis intends to expand its presence in Southeast Asia and possibly lower-cost European countries, with the goal of producing smaller vehicles priced below 25,000 euros ($27,153) in order to better compete with Chinese automakers.
Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, acknowledged that EVs generally have higher production costs compared to internal combustion vehicles, but emphasized the importance of reducing costs to maintain affordability and profitability. Tavares also mentioned the versatility of the new platform, noting its potential use for off-road vehicles like Jeeps and its adaptability for internal combustion engines, although it is primarily optimized for EVs. The medium platform is part of Stellantis’ four-platform strategy, with the others being small, large, and frame platforms designed for trucks.
