In a recent annual Hot Wheels vehicle theft report by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), it was revealed that full-size pick-up trucks from Chevrolet and Ford have once again secured the top spots.

According to the NICB report published on July 19, 2022, Chevrolet and Ford full-size pick-up trucks maintained their dominance in vehicle thefts for the second consecutive year. These popular models were responsible for the highest number of stolen vehicles in the USA. Notably, the GMC full-size pick-up also made it to the top 10 list. Out of the nearly 1 million vehicles reported stolen in 2021, a significant 14% consisted of Chevrolet, Ford, and GMC full-size pick-up models.

Rising used car values and their impact:

The President and CEO of NICB, David Glawe, pointed out that the soaring values of used cars have contributed to the increasing theft rates. Over the past two years, used car values have risen by nearly 35% due to supply chain challenges and inflation. Stolen vehicles are often shipped overseas for resale or dismantled to obtain valuable used car parts within the United States.

Popular models targeted by thieves

In 2021, passenger vehicle thefts witnessed an 8% increase compared to the previous year. Apart from Chevrolet and Ford full-size pick-ups, the NICB report highlighted the inclusion of the Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee sport utility vehicle in the top 10 list for the first time. Furthermore, six other models, namely Honda Civic, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Honda CR-V, and Toyota Corolla, accounted for 15% of all stolen passenger vehicles in 2021.

It is also noteworthy to point out that Hyundai has had a recent rash of vehicle thefts of both Hyundai and Kia vehicles due to a hotwiring security flaw that has been exploited on social media. While those vehicle thefts weren’t enough to make the top 10 list, Hyundai and Kia vehicles remain to be a large target as the company faces lawsuits over the vehicle thefts.

According to the NICB’s analysis, the popularity and availability of full-size pick-up trucks and mid-sized sedans contribute to their higher theft rates. These vehicles are not only highly sought after by consumers but also make the top-selling lists in the United States year after year. Their widespread usage makes them appealing targets for thieves.

Protecting against vehicle theft

To prevent becoming a victim of vehicle theft, it is essential to follow some basic security measures. The NICB recommends the following steps to safeguard your vehicle:

1. Secure your vehicle: Roll up your windows, lock your doors, and always take the keys or fob with you.
2. Choose well-lit parking areas: Whenever possible, park your vehicle in well-lit areas that are monitored by security personnel and equipped with surveillance cameras.
3. Keep valuables hidden: Remove any valuables from your car or keep them locked in the trunk. Alternatively, conceal them out of sight under a rear deck cover.
4. Consider additional security features: Enhance your vehicle’s protection by installing immobilizing or tracking devices, which can deter thieves and aid in recovery if your vehicle is stolen.

In case your vehicle is stolen, it is crucial to act promptly. Contact law enforcement and your insurance provider immediately. According to NICB data, reporting a stolen vehicle as soon as possible increases the likelihood of recovery.
